Violin: own model, made in 2021

The inspiration for this model came from my grandmother's violin. My grandmother was born in 1900 and played the violin as a child. Her parents bought her a violin from Karel van der Meer in Amsterdam. From dendrological research we know that the violin was probably made around 1715 in England, Flanders or the Netherlands: until recently experts were not sure. Recently, Hubert de Launay discovered 3 other violins and a viola from the same hand. It was probably made by an as yet unknown pupil of Hendrik Jacobs in Amsterdam.

The outline of the body is similar to the original violin, the scroll and the f-holes are inspired by Hendrik Jacobs. I made this violin in 2021. For the top I chose 30 year old European bearclaw spruce from a retired violin maker. The sound of the wood was open and clear. The maple back is nicely flamed and comes from the same source.
